Pan Am’s Supersonic Clipper / in the skies of tomorrow. USA, ca. 1960s. 35 ½ x 43 ½”. Linen backed. A-. RARE. In 1963, Pan Am ordered six Concorde jets from the British Aircraft Corporation and Sud Aviation of France. The supersonic clippers were designed to travel at 1,500 miles an hour, flying between New York and London in roughly two and half hours. A prototype was expected in 1966, and the first planes available by the end of the decade. However, as development progressed, industry views on the aircraft changed, with many questioning the economics and reliability of the plane. By 1971, it was increasingly doubted that Pan Am would continue with the order. Plans for the Concorde were officially scrapped by 1973. This is believed to be the only poster Pan Am issued to promote its Concorde venture.
