DANGON, Henri. Salon des Armees. 1916. Paris: H. Chachoin. Color lithograph poster depicting a French poilu resting on the battlefield, whittling a statuette of Victory. 46 x 30 ½”. Linen backed. Slight darkening along folds; small replaced piece in bottom margin. A-/B+. Dangon was a private in the French army during World War I, and illustrated for decades for the periodical “La Sourire.” The Ministry of Beaux-Arts and the Ministry of War sponsored exhibitions of artwork by soldiers who were serving in World War I. Dangon’s poster won first prize in a contest to promote this 1916 exhibit held to benefit the war effort. The poster was also displayed at the Salmagundi Club in New York.
