Engraved frontispiece, map, 2 folding plans, 77 engraved plates including several folding (one hand–colored plate and one colored line drawing), emendations and directions to the binder leaf at rear. (Intermittent foxing to plates near margins). 19th century brown morocco ruled in blind, turnip tool at corners, raised bands, compartments with turnip device and gilt titles, all edges gilt, gilt fillet turn–ins, marbled endpapers (a bit of rubbing at joints to all 3 volumes with a few professional touch ups). FIRST EDITION, of the first account of Pompeii in English with many plates based on Gell’s own sketches and is considered the definitive work on the excavations of Pompeii.
