Large hand–colored lithograph case map, dissected and laid on four sheets of linen, each part consisting of 20 sections, 80 total, measuring 1701 x 1600 mm, some offsetting. A HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF STANFORD’S LARGE FORMAT WALL MAP. In the early 1850s Edward Stanford commissioned Alexander Keith Johnston to prepare a set of large wall maps of each of the 6 continents: Europe; Australasia; Asia; Africa; North America; and South America. Johnston's wall maps, which Stanford titled “Library Maps” became one of the most enduring works of the period, issued continuously with updates well into the 20th Century.
