Issued in varying amounts to merchant William Ellery of Hartford, who served as a captain in the war. Notations on verso regarding accruing of interest. 7 ½ x 16”. SIGNED BY TREASURER JOHN LAWRENCE and guarantees repayment “after the cessation of hostilities between Great Britain and these United States.” One of the first documents issued to refer to the new nation as “United States.”
