Original publisher’s blind–stamped cloth, gilt–lettered spine (rebacked preserving original spine and endpapers, light spotting to covers, scattered browning to text). Lacking the large folding map as usual as it was printed and sold with the book at an additional charge. Provenance: contemporary penciled inscription dated 1851. FIRST EDITION, of Sage’s first-hand account of his visit to New Mexico, witnessing the disaster of the Snivley expedition and the attempt by Texans to overthrow the Mexican government. Considered the most “intelligent narrative of extensive travels from the Platte to the Arkansas, including the best contemporary account of Snively’s abortive land pirate expedition” (Howes).
