SHERIDAN, Philip H. (1831-1888). Engraved document signed (“P.H. Sheridan”) as Lieutenant General and countersigned by John P. Nicholson, 7th January 1887. One page on vellum, accomplished in manuscript, original embossed red seal. Commendation to Captain Oliver Cromwell Livermore, 13th Massachusetts Infantry. Framed, 25 x 29 ½”. General Philip H. Sheridan distinguished himself as a cunning and ruthless military commander throughout the Civil War, and his service is credited as being instrumental to the Union’s ultimate victory over the Confederacy in 1865. Following the war Sheridan was appointed military governor of the Fifth Military District which encompassed Texas and Louisiana, and organized military relief efforts in the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
