EXTRA–ILLUSTRATED WITH 125 ENGRAVINGS, PLAYBILLS, FACSIMILES, SHEET MUSIC AND LETTERS. 19th century full tan morocco gilt with intricate filigree “Scottish Wheel” design, similar fan–shaped cornerpieces, raised bands, spines completely gilt in compartments with filigree designs, gilt titling, top edge gilt, dentelle turn ins, doublures elaborately inlaid with various types of wood forming a central lozenge within frame, gilt stamp–signed by S. Kaufman of London (rebacked preserving original spine). Provenance: Ellen Terry (1847–1928), ownership signature and initials of the acclaimed English actress in the late 19th and early 20th centuries known for her portrayal of roles in Shakespeare and other classics; B.G.S. (bookplate). A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF 19TH–CENTURY GRANGERIZING and a fine association copy from the library of an actress on the English stage. Terry made her first stage appearance at age 9 in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale at London’s Princess’s Theatre in 1856 – the same stage that Madame Vestris appeared on in 1846.
