Autograph manuscript signed (“Anthony Hope Hawkins”) to the president of the Mark Twain Society, Cyril Clemens, for publication in “Tributes to Mark Twain”, 5 March 1929. One page, 12mo (178 x 133 mm), on personal stationary, creased, with original envelope. Included with the original pamphlet in which the letter was to be published in; cloth chemise; morocco–backed slipcase. In full: “I gladly join in the tribute to Mark Twain. I think that he is as much loved in England as in America. His humor and his humanity have an appeal which transcends the limit of locality or nationality– that, however, without any loss of its native American flavor”. Originally published in the special Mark Twain number of the Overland Monthly, April 1929 and later published in the Mark Twain Society booklet “Tributes to Mark Twain” (Paris, 1930).
