GREY, Zane (1872–1939). Forlorn River. London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [ca. 1927]. 8vo. Original publisher’s blue cloth lettered in black (spine slightly skewed, title–page foxed); original unclipped dust jacket (some wear to extremities with small chips and short tears). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, INSCRIBED TO LOLA GORNALL: “No. 1 / To / Lola Zana / from / Zane”. Lola was an Australian writer, who over the course of 3 years, kept a written correspondence with Grey (see Gornall papers at Yale). After 3 years, they finally met in Auckland with high expectations, but Lola parried Zane’s advances. The two would still maintain their correspondence over the years even though it would never become physical. (Pauly, Zane Grey: His Life, His Adventures, His Women, p. 306).
