Original publisher’s blind–embossed cloth [BAL’s binding B] (rebacked with original spine laid down, losses at extreme ends reinforced, boards lightly rubbed, lacking front free endpaper, marginal browning or staining throughout). FIRST EDITION of Hawthorne’s famed gothic novel that would later influence H.P. Lovecraft’s tales of a cursed New England. Probably a second printing without the battered type on p. 149 but with the ads dated March 1851 as seen in the first edition.
