Folio in eights (299 x 190 mm). Text in Greek (lacks Latin translation which was later published in 1504). Woodcut Aldine device on title–page. (Title soiled with folds, small spot of marginal worming through h4 and [h8]). 18th century calf, 7 compartments with 6 raised bands, leather lettering–piece gilt in second compartment, remainder completely tooled in gilt, all edges speckled red (joints tender with some separation, light chipping to compartments, minor rubbing at corners). Provenance: Charles Ford (bookplate); Eton College Library (bookplates); bibliographical notations on front free endpaper (Mitford, 1804. “This is the first book in which the Aldine Anchor is used”). EDITIO PRINCEPS of the Greek text. “We do not know the exact story behind the edition of Philostratus's Life of Apollonius of Tyana: Aldus finished printing the text in March 1501 but did not publish it until May 1504, and sent it out with an introduction which attacked the work point by point and declared it the worst thing he had ever read” (M.
