VENTURI, Robert; BROWN, Denise Scott; and Steven IZENOUR. Learning from Las Vegas. [Cambridge]: The MIT Press, 1972. Large 4to. Designed by Muriel Cooper. Numerous illustrations from photographs and architectural plans. With errata slip laid in. Original publisher’s blue–grey cloth gilt with color photograph illustration mounted to upper cover and framed in gilt (light soiling to edges); original glassine jacket (small loss to upper left). FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY ROBERT VENTURI AND DENISE SCOTT BROWN. Scarce with dust jacket. An iconic work in the field of postmodern architecture, the genesis of Learning from Las Vegas was a third year graduate studio class taught by the authors at Yale University in 1968. Accompanied by thirteen students, the authors traveled to Las Vegas to study the city’s urban form. An unflinching critique of Modernist architecture, the book ignited a firestorm of controversy in the architectural world, with the book’s defenders referred to as “The Greys” and its detractors as “The Whites.” The book became associated more and more with postmodern architectural thought as the younger generation of architects held it up as a highly influential work.
