[TRANBY CROFT AFFAIR]. CLARKE, Sir Edward George (1841-1931). Gordon-Cumming v. Wilson and Others / Speeches for the Plaintiff. London: Stevens & Haynes, 1891. 8vo. Half-morocco with marbled boards, marbled endpapers, gilt titles, signed by Maclehose of Glasgow (rubbing, soiling). FIRST EDITION. The Tranby Croft Affair stemmed from a September 1890 incident in which Lieutenant-Colonel Sir William Gordon-Cumming was accused of cheating in a game of baccarat at a party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wilson in their Glasgow home. In attendance was the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, who was called to testify in defense of the Wilsons. His appearance scandalized the monarchy, as Edward’s involvement in games of chance was considered to be beneath the dignity of his position. Only four institutional copies located. Provenance: Alexander McGrigor (bookplate).
