PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY MAUGHAM: “For Raymond Marriott / These notes made during / a journey in China. / W. Somerset Maugham.” Raymond Marriott (1911–1992) was a noted English journalist and drama critic of the Stage. Marriott would on numerous occasions obtain intimate invitations for interviews including one by Queen Marie of Romania asking him to tea at the Ritz and an invite from Maugham to stay at his main residence at the Villa La Mauresque.
