Few royals in recent memory have been as controversial as Edward, Duke of Windsor, who in December 1936 abdicated the British throne after less than a year in the face of stiff opposition to his proposed marriage to Wallis Simpson, an American woman who was deemed to be an unsuitable candidate for queen consort due to her two previous divorces. Following his abdication Edward continued to be a lightning rod for scandal, his appearance of support for Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime a stain on his reputation that would follow himself and his wife for the rest of their lives.
