Antonio Helu was a director and screenwriter of Mexican cinema active between 1935–1960 and best known for his fictional detective Maximo Roldan, conceived as a Mexican answer to American characters such as Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. La Obligacion de Asesinar is a novelization of Helu’s 1937 film, The Obligation to Assassinate.
