Frontispiece, numerous in–text diagrams, folding plate. Contemporary sheep (covers detached, spine deteriorated, some marginal browning). Second edition. Provenance: OWNED BY A RESIDENT OF COLONIAL PHILADELPHIA. Several lengthy inscriptions on endpapers discuss the provenance which passed from Joseph Taylor who received it on 3 August 1731 to Samuel Bettle [Biddle] after Taylor’s passing (d. 5 July 1742). A note describes the genealogy of the Biddle family and their coming to America including Samuel Biddle who was born in Philadelphia on 4 January 1701/2. The Biddle’s were an Old Philadelphian family who descended from English immigrants that arrived in New Jersey in 1681. The most notable family member being Owen Biddle, Sr. (1737–1799) who was an American Revolutionary War soldier and astronomer.
