Full 18th century binding, Groton School supralibros gilt on upper covers, red and black morocco lettering–pieces gilt, spines gilt (some splitting to joints, Volume I upper cover detached, headbands protruding, two lettering–pieces lacking on Volumes II and III, occasional mild browning or spotting near margins, without frontispieces as seen in the British Library set). Provenance: I. B. Herne (armorial bookplate); 1946 Gorton School Historical Essay Prize bookplate (George Livingston Nichols; Moorhead Cowell Kennedy III). Mixed set: Volumes I–V are 10th editions; VI is a 9th edition; VII is an 8th edition; VIII–X do not have edition statements; XI and XII are 5th editions. An uncommon set. “From the foregoing it will be evident how slavishly these volumes were reprinted and, also, that the edition–notes are quite meaningless”. See Duncan B. Macdonald. A Bibliographical and Literary Study of the First Appearance of the “Arabian Nights” in Europe.
