DICKENS, Charles (1812–1870). A pair of works, including: [MOGRIDGE, George]. Sergeant Bell, and His Raree–Show. London: printed for Thomas Tegg, 1839. 16mo. Frontispiece, numerous in–text woodcuts by Cruikshank and others, 1p. publisher’s ads. at end. Original publisher’s brown cloth gilt (spine gently sunned, inner joints reinforced). A 1912 “A Tribute to Genius” centenary testimonial stamp of Dickens is pasted on the front pastedown. FIRST EDITION. Dickens had originally agreed to write this book at the request of the publisher. Negotiations were, however, cancelled. As Eckel notes “This is the third of the books illustrated by George Cruikshank with which Dickens' name has been associated. There appears to be absolutely no reason for this connection. It was written by a man of the name of Mogridge.” Eckel, pp. 208–209. –– Sketches by Boz. London: Chapman and Hall, 1850. 8vo. Frontispiece by Cruikshank. Contemporary half morocco, marbled sides, raised bands, spine gilt, all edges gilt (boards rubbed). First cheap edition.
