GERMAIN, KARL. (CHARLES MATTMUELLER). KARL GERMAIN’S BOOK TEST. Circa 1905. Being a gimmicked copy of The Tragedy of Hamlet (London: J.M. Dent, 1902), that allowed Germain, performing together with his sister Ida, to apparently divine the words or page at which a spectator was looking. Sold together with a straight copy of the same work, and the scrap pages used by Germain left over after the creation of the gimmicked book. A typed note laid in each book states, “This is a forcing book and a straight book. Used by Germain and his sister Ida. She memorized the entire page… and would recite any line indicated to Germain by a member of the audience. He, of course pretended to read the line himself and transmit it via telepathy. Courtesy Stuart Cramer.”
