SPIRIT PAINTING. Los Angeles: F.G. Thayer, 1930s. A blank canvas, placed in an open gilt wooden frame is lit from behind by a single bulb. The lights are dimmed, and then – slowly and eerily – an image develops on the canvas, coming into sharp view after a brief few seconds elapse. Finally, the canvas is removed from the frame and the painting, executed apparently by spirit hands, is displayed to the audience. Height 55”. Includes canvases. Shows wear from professional use. Owned and used by Paul Fleming, the noted Chautauqua magician and student of Karl Germain.
