ASHE, Thomas (1770–1835). Travels in America, performed in 1806, for the Purpose of Exploring the Rivers Alleghany, Monongahela, Ohio, and Mississippi… London: Edmund M. Blunt for William Sawyer & Co., 1808.

8vo. (Spotting throughout, profuse marginalia). Modern half calf antique. Provenance: Humberston Skipwith (1791–1863), numerous ownership signatures including annotations and marginal notes. Skipwith was one of the wealthiest men in Virginia at the time and also the largest slave holder in the state.

FIRST ONE–VOLUME EDITION, published one year after the three-volume edition. This book chronicles his trip by flatboat down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers in 1806. He is condemned by most later commentators in the United States for his misrepresentation and exaggerations of Americans, although according to Clark, “Ashe’s account is interesting and highly readable”.
