[BINDING – LOUIS XVIII]. Petit almanac de la cour de France. Paris: Le Fuel, 1816. 12mo. Contemporary red straight–grain morocco with alternating fleur–de–lis and lilies gilt tooled border, upper cover affixed with a crowned monogram of Louis XVIII wrought of gilded metal, spine tooled with an intertwining gilt vine, all edges gilt; matching slipcase with gilt border. Provenance: Leon Gruel (bookplate), famed binder, collector, and successor to the Parisian bookbinding workshop Gruel & Engelman (“Modern book binding has discovered nothing to equal the old designs, and at best we can only copy” (Leon Gruel in The Bookman, 1900:11)); GDV (blindstamped monogram on half–title). A VERY EXQUISITE FRENCH ROYAL BINDING.
