CROSS, H[enry] H. (American, 1837-1918). Barrel of Apples. 1916. Oil on canvas. Visible area: 24 ½ x 30”. Some cracking to paint. Framed (frame size: 29 ½ x 34 ½”). Some wear to frame. Good. Cross was an adventurous youth, who ran away with the circus at age 15 (and again years later), and then traveled to Paris to learn painting with Rosa Bonheur. When he returned to the U.S., he learned Sioux and became one of the best-known portraitists of Native Americans (Buffalo Bill Cody called him “the greatest painter of Indian portraiture of all times”).
