HAMMER-PURGSTALL, Joseph von (1774-1856). Histoire de l’Ordre des Assassins. Paris: Paulin, 1833.
8vo. Half-title. (Light spotting or offsetting throughout). Full contemporary dark calf gilt, edges marbled (few tiny spots of rubbing at ends).
FIRST FRENCH EDITION. The Assassins, a sect within Sh’ia Islam, started in Iran in the 11th century and spread to Iraq and Syria, ultimately being eliminated by the Mongols in the 13th century. The word “assassin” literally translates to “hashish user” and the young converts performed their acts of terrorism under its influence. A Horowitz high spot.
