CHARVET, A.P. De l’action compare de l’Opium, et de ses principes constituans sur l’économie animale. Paris: F.G. Levrault, 1826.
8vo. Half-title. Contemporary sheep-backed boards, gilt-lettered in 3 compartments, raised bands, red top stain, others uncut (light surface wear to covers); original printed wrappers bound in.
FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, originally published as a thesis in the same year, marked the first contribution to experimental psychopharmacology that is characterized by comprehensive testing on animals and crude attempts to compare lethal doses in animals and humans. Charvet’s work also represents “the first experimental work to deal systematically with the effects of opium on humans and animals” (Siegel and Hirschman, Charvet and the First Psychopharmacological Studies on Opium, Journal of Psychoactive Drugs Vol. 15 Oct-Dec, 1983, p. 323). A Horowitz high spot.
