Full contemporary brown morocco, spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, gilt-lettering in 2, gilt centerpieces in remainder, top edge gilt; original wrappers bound in; slipcase. Provenance: Luis de Caralt (bookplate), Spanish publisher and collector of modern illustrated books.

LIMITED EDITION, one of 175 copies, this being marked “Exemplaire Speciale”, printed on Japan Imperial velin (hors commerce copies were on Arches) and is SIGNED BY BOTH THE AUTHOR AND ARTIST on the limitation. Includes an extra suite volume of all the etchings, ornaments, and initials in various 4 states, loose as issued and in a folding chemise with slipcase. Considered Roche’s masterpiece of book illustration that captures the fantasy and horror of the opiated state. Talvart & Place 1D. A Horowitz high spot.
