FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION, issued as No. 14 in Wheeler’s Indian Railway Library series. A slightly expanded version of the suppressed edition of 1840 (all but three copies destroyed from a print run of 3,000). “Efforts were made to suppress this collection, but, although it is very scarce, copies can be found, and several have been reported” (Livingston). Kipling describes the opium dens or ”chandu shops” in Calcutta where the purest form of opium is smoked (raw opium is boiled and strained). Livingston 70; Richards A52. A Horowitz high spot.
