FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY FRANKLIN on the half-title. Franklin, the grandson of a slave owned by Native Americans, published this landmark survey of the Black experience in America which has sold more than three million copies and remains in print today. Franklin passed away shortly after the election of America’s first Black president, an event he proclaimed as being “one of the most historic - if not the most historic moment - in the history of the country”.
