FIRST EDITION, FORMERLY OWNED BY THE LIBRARIAN OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. Winthrop served as librarian of Harvard from 1772 until 1787. He was given the task of overseeing the removal and transportation of the contents of the library to various surrounding towns during the Revolutionary War when the Continental Army occupied the College buildings. While the books were being packaged, Winthrop joined the fight at the Battle of Bunker Hill where he was wounded in the neck but would survive. Winthrop went on to work as a Register of Probate for several decades and became an important Anti-Federalist. Evans 31434.
