[McMURTRY, Larry (1936-2021), his copy]. MACLEAN, Norman (1902-1990). A River Runs Through It and Other Stories. Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, [1976].
8vo. Original light blue cloth; original unclipped dust jacket (spine gently sunned, some transferring of old bookplate to front flap). Provenance: Larry McMurtry (his bookplate, which he designed, features the horseshoe-shaped brand his father and grandfather used on the McMurtry cattle), from his personal library at his home in Archer City.
FIRST EDITION of this author’s scarce first book with a reported first printing of only 1,155 copies. The basis for the 1992 film of the same name directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad Pitt. There is no doubt that Larry McMurtry drew inspiration from this for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Lonesome Dove (1985), which, much like Maclean’s work, sets a vivid scene of the beautiful Montana landscape and the rivers that run through it.
