PROVENANCE: TENNESSEE CLAFLIN (1844–1923), PENCILED OWNERSHIP INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER “RETURN WITHOUT FAIL TO MRS. SHERWOOD ANDERSON, 347 E 50, NY CITY 22”. Claflin was an American suffragist and the first woman, along with her sister Victoria Woodhull, to open a Wall Street brokerage firm in 1870. She married Anderson in 1916 shortly after the divorce of his first wife. The two would later separate in 1922 and finalize the divorce in 1924.
