2 volumes, 4to (292 x 218 mm). 75 engraved plates including portrait, most engraved by Gerard Vander Gucht after John Vanderbank, engraved head-, tail-pieces and initials (offsetting to text from plates). Includes 6 extra plates not called for including plates after Hogarth and the rare foldout after James Mynde published in 1725. Full contemporary diced Russian calf, single gilt rule frame on covers, spines gilt ruled and lettered (upper cover detached on vol. I, joints splitting, edgewear, turn-ins dried and flaking, spine ends worn with some losses). Provenance: John Webster (engraved armorial bookplate).

THIRD TONSON EDITION, of this famous English translation first published in 1742, contains a printer’s error, surviving into the present third edition, led to it being known as “The Jarvis translation”.
