Browne ["Phiz"] including the rare Buss “suppressed plates” facing p. 69 and p. 74 (the “Phiz” replacements only appear ii very late issues). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH AN ADDITIONAL 103 PLATES which includes 13 of the hand-colored Onwhyn plates from 1894 with printed wrapper bound in, all 42 “Phiz” plates in duplicate showing various states including the early page numbers instead of the later captions and imprints and 15 plates in triplet (these being the “replacements, substitutes, and duplicates” mentioned in Hatton and Cleaver), and a complete set of 32 of the Onwhyn “pirated edition” plates originally issued in eight monthly parts by E. Grattan in 1837 (some plates lightly brown or with spotting as usual). Full 20th century green crushed niger gilt, covers with geometric designs of a rectangle inside a diamond, spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, gilt-lettering in 2, others with multiple diamond shaped fillets, top edge gilt, turn-ins gilt, GILT STAMP-SIGNED BY BAYNTUN (spine gently darkened); quarter morocco drop-back spine box.
