3 volumes, 8vo. Half-titles, 1pp. publisher’s ad at end of vol. I. Original dark green very-fine-bead-grain cloth blocked in black and lettered in gold, brown coated endpapers, uncut [Sadleir’s first issue binding] (a contemporary note affixed to the front pastedown of vol. III states that the cloth on that volume is an exact facsimile although it does not appear to be but perhaps it is a remainder binding from the publisher that is uniformly the same as the others; vols. I and II with cocked spines, joints cracked in vol. II).

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, IN THE FIRST ISSUE CLOTH (later issues are in coarse bubble grain). Originally published as a serial in Macmillan’s Magazine in May 1886-April 1887, and is said to have been the author’s favorite among the novels he wrote. One of only 860 copies bound-up.
