Full blue calf with single gilt frame, spine in 5 compartments with raised bands, red and light blue leather lettering-pieces gilt in four, top edge gilt, dentelles (spine gently sunned, some light rubbing to joints and fore-corners); original cloth bound in at end.

FIRST EDITION with publisher’s ads dated 1 March 1850. Hawthorne’s work was an immediate success, selling 2,500 copies in its first week of publication, giving Hawthorne his first literary success. BAL 7600; Clark A16.1; Grolier American 59.
