SIMPSON, William Ross (American, 20th century) Battlecock Rider. ca. 1988. Mixed media sculpture. 33 h x 29 w x 20” d. Lowery Stokes Sims, (who at the time was Associate Curator of 20th century art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art), awarded Simpson The Grand Rapids Council Sculpture Award for this work in 1989 for the Festival of the Arts in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This work combines parts of spiders, road kill skulls, jewelry, 8 mouse jawbones and other strictly found on the farm animal parts to create this tour de force of a Ray Harryhausen/Game of Thrones-esque sculpture. Atop this taxidermy rooster sits the “Battlecock Rider”, a half human half animal creature with webbed feet and two skulls. He calls his creation “a nasty little gargoyle creature” (the rooster) with a “lizard man.” Surface dirt. Minor areas of wear, shrinkage and loss. Overall the work is complete and visually intact. This lot is well made but very fragile. One turkey leg is slightly loose and is structurally sound. Good condition. Third-party shipping required.
