TOLLIVER, Mose (American, 1915-2006) Large Painted Chair with Figure, Trees and Flowers. ca. 1980s. House paint on wooden chair. 24 x 18”. Signed lower right. Surface dirt. Some paint loss on arms and other localized areas. This is an outdoor porch chair with a newer plywood seat drilled down where the cushion normally would be. There are few chairs extant and this is the largest one we have seen. Female figure on the seating area with flowers and trees. Snakes on the arm rests. Other flowers on rungs. Tolliver was born and raised near Montgomery, Alabama. In the 1960s, he suffered a terrible injury to his legs at his job, when a half-ton of marble fell off a forklift and crushed them. Unable to work, he began painting full-time. Corners worn with surface dirt and other marks overall. Upper left corner and upper center edge has masonite loss. Good condition. Third-party shipping required.
