[INDIGENOUS CRAFTS]. Handmade Tlingit Dagger. [Southern Alaska, n.d.]. Copper, cedar, abalone, possibly seal skin and gut. 13 ½” long. The copper is loose from the handle which allows us to look at the raw copper tang. This raw copper looks to be native mined rather than European melted and formed. As can be seen from the main blade it is in the form of traditional Tlingit copper work, in that, this is flat on one side and convex on the other. The dagger was part of the estate of an Army Veteran born in 1919 and died in 2002, who served during World War II in the Alaskan territory for the US Army and would likely have traded for this piece while in Southern Alaska which is the northern boundary of the Tlingit culture. This dagger looks carried and has wear on the pommel consistent with belt carrying. An excellent example of Tlingit workmanship.
