WYATT, Snapp (American, 1905-1984)) African, Asian and Indian Animals. Paint on canvas. ca. 1960s. 120 x 118”. Signed lower left. Snap Wyatt was the most well-known painter of circus banners, primarily painted in the 1940's and continued into the 1970's. He was famous for his bold, stylized figures with quick caricatures. Only the essential details of the performer were outlined in black to make them stand out. The bright and colorful banners drew in the crowd with the mystery of what was inside the tent. Wyatt is considered to be among the top in his field. The huge canvases played to a carnival attendee's curiosity and directed them to walk right into the sideshow tent. Few considered the canvases of sideshows to be an art form. Sideshow banner showing exotic animals from around the world. Some wear from exposure to the elements over the years. Good condition for age. Provenance: Carl Hammer Gallery, Chicago, Illinois.
