[ARTIST UNKNOWN]. (American, 20th century) Untitled WWII USO Mural, Comic Book Characters of the Time. 1942. Oil on canvas. Signed Patti Doty Smith and dated lower right. 42 x 215”. Unstretched and unframed. This mural is populated with dozens upon dozens of cartoon characters of the past and of the time. Characters included are the usual suspects: Superman, Nancy, L’il Abner and Daisy Mae, Blondie and Dagwood, Katzenjammer Kids, Dick Tracy, Popeye and Olive Oyl, and the list goes on and on. The work has multiple patches throughout its almost 18 ft width. It is in good and stable condition considering its age. The dark coloration overall is from discoloration over time and nicotine from years of being in a bar. There is in-painting and a new coat of varnish after some restoration. There is an extension of the canvas of two inches on the right vertical edge and a visual extension of one inch on the horizontal span for easier framing or mounting, and structural reinforcement. There is an overall reinforcement of canvas of 4 inches around the perimeter on the back side. The sale of this work benefits INTUIT: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art. Third party shipping required.
