SCHULZE, Franz (American, 1927-2019) Untitled Portrait of a Woman. ca. 1970. Charcoal, with stumping and white chalk, on tan laid paper. Image: 25 ¼ x 19¼”. Frame (glass): 35 x 27 ½”. Signed lower right. Schulze was an important Chicago art critic and educator who chronicled the lives and work of two of the 20th century’s most consequential architects, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson. He also authored a seminal book, Fantastic Images: Chicago Art since 1945, which examined the work of Chicago artists like Leon Golub, Ellen Lanyon, Seymour Rosofsky, Gladys Nilsson, and Cosmo Campoli among many others. His work is in the Collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Not examined out of frame. Good condition. Provenance: Estate of Richard Christiansen.
