BRAMSON, Phyllis (American, b. 1932) Blaming the Mirror. 1980. 52 x 17 ½”. Frame: 54 x 20”. Mixed media collage on paper. The art writer Miranda McClintoc wrote: “Phyllis Bramson’s imaginative portrayals of stereotypical sexual relationships incorporate the passionate complexity of eastern mythology, the sexual innuendos of soap operas and sometimes the happy endings of cartoons.” This is a solid example of her mid-career work. Bramson is a recipient of three National Endowments, a Senior Fulbight Scholar, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Grant, and a 2009 Anonymous Was a Woman Award. Over thirty one-person exhibitions, including The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, The Chicago Cultural Center and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago among many others.
