Black and white intertextual illustrations by Jules Garnier, and silver and gold headpiece decoration on page [i]. Original wrappers bound into contemporary black cloth backstrip over marbled boards, brown gilt morocco lettering label on spine (spine label worn and chipped, binding edgeworn, soiled, hinges cracked, some gutters overopened, bookplate and previous owner’s ink note on ffep, embossed ownership stamp of O. J. Lacroix on the title-page. Good. FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 50 COPIES ON JAPON PAPER. Includes images of various circus promoters such as P.T. Barnum, acrobats, and tattooed performers. Considered to be the most successful collaboration between Le Roux and Garnier, the illustrations contained therein were procured from circus playbills and from photographs specially taken for the publication by Service Photographique de la Salpetriere.
