BARNUM, Phineas Taylor (1810 – 1891). ALS (“P.T. Barnum”), regarding Jumbo’s tusk. New York: March 18, 1886. On a sheet of white stationery (7 ¾ x 5”), from the Murray Hill Hotel, to Prof. Ward. In full: “It is an awful pity if a slice of Jumbo’s tusk has not been nor cannot be sent to the Barnum Museum Tuft’s College. It may be years before they have the skin. Is it too late?/P.T. Barnum.” Accompanied by an issue of White Tops (Feb/Mar 1937), in which this letter is reproduced on the inside back cover; and a letter (1937) from Al Mayer, its former owner.
