8vo. Original parchment-backed boards, spine stamped in gilt (spine toned and rubbed, with a few creases, light offsetting to endleaves); original slipcase with paper label on spine (some edgewear, a few joints starting).
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 1 of 201 copies SIGNED BY FERBER. First adapted for the stage in 1927 by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II (winning the Pulitzer Prize), with a silent film version in 1929 (which failed at the box office); it was re-done in 1936 with Irene Dunne and Paul Robeson, directed by James Whale, which was a huge success (it was remade in 1951 with Kathryn Grayson and Ava Gardner).
