SIDNEY, Margaret (pseudonym of Harriet LOTHROP, 1844-1924). Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. Boston: D. Lothrop and Company, [1880].
8vo. Illustrated. Original gold cloth, front board and spine stamped in brown, gilt, and orange (light rubbing, toning, occasional soiling to binding, hinges starting, some intermittent foxing and soiling in text); morocco-backed folding box.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE BINDING, FIRST PRINTING with “said Polly” as the caption on p. 231. This novel, published by her husband’s publishing company, was the first volume of the popular “Peppers” series of books. It was also the basis of the 1939 film starring Edith Fellows and Charles Peck, directed by Charles Barton. A very handsome copy.
