[ADLER, E. Maurice “Buddy” (1909-1960)]. 1957 Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award trophy awarded to Buddy Adler for “High Quality of Production Achievement” from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Original cast bronze bust of Thalberg sculpted by Gualberto Rocchi, set atop an onyx black marble pedestal base with engraved brass plaque.
The Thalberg Award is awarded periodically by the Academy at the Governors Award ceremonies to “creative producers, whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production” and is still counted as an “honorary Oscar”. The award was established in 1937 and was first presented at the 10th Academy Awards in March 1938. Considered the rarest and most prestigious honor bestowed by the Academy, as there have only been 39 recipients to date. Adler was an American film producer and production head for 20th Century Fox studios. In 1954, his production of From Here to Eternity, based on James Jones’ 1951 debut novel of the same name, won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Adler also produced the 1956 film Bus Stop, starring Marilyn Monroe. This is the first Thalberg designed by Rocchi in 1957 to be awarded and is the same design used today. Included with clippings mentioning Adler winning the award and with photos featuring Adler with his award.
