CRANE, Stephen (1871-1900). The Monster and Other Stories. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1899.
8vo. Illustrated. Original red cloth, front board stamped in gilt and black, spine lettered in black (spine toned, very minor rubbing to boards, several pages unopened); cloth folding box.
FIRST EDITION. The title novella is about an African-American coachman named Henry Johnson, who saves his employer’s son from a fire and is horribly disfigured. The people in the town insist that his employer sends Henry out of the town due to his terrible appearance, but his employer (a doctor) refuses, and continues to care for him, which causes him and his family to be ostracized. This novella about racism was loosely based on the 1892 lynching of Robert Lewis. BAL 4085.
